As Oklahoma is in the middle of a bitterly cold winter, RCI has found a few tips that might help with some of the common problems that arise during this season.
With all the snow that the Claremore areas have had already this winter, temperatures have stayed well below freezing. But on those few days where the snow and ice begin to melt, we are so happy until later that night when everything refreezes. And it’s that next morning, when we’re frozen out of our vehicles, that we wish there was a way to prevent this from happening (other than warm weather!). Well there is a little trick that might help save you from having to fight your car door. Try rubbing cooking spray on the rubber seals around your car doors! When the snow melts the water seeps into the rubber lining and freezes during the night. But if you use the cooking spray, the oils in the cooking spray prevent water from melting into the rubber; thus allowing you to get into your vehicle.
But what if your lock is frozen shut? Then what? Well, you can use your hand sanitizer! Just put some sanitizer on your key and the lock and it should unlock right away. The alcohol in the hand sanitizer is one of the main ingredients in de-icers. Just make sure that the hand sanitizer you use has a minimum of 60% alcohol in it. Any less than that and the sanitizer won’t work on the lock and it won’t sanitizer your hands either!
Having a problem with fogged up windows? Consider using shaving cream. The cream creates a protective cream on the windows that help prevent fog. And the shaving cream has many of the same ingredients that are in commercial defoggers. Simply spray the cream on the inside of the glass and wipe off.
So now you know how to prevent your car doors and lock from freezing shut, and how to guard against fogged up windows!
