In the month of January, RCI is learning about the character word Punctuality. It is not just about showing up on time. It’s about giving respect to your co-workers, prioritizing your day and activities, and of course the time issue – arriving early, keeping track of time, and finishing early.

Often punctuality is mistaken for just being on time, but it is much more than that. It’s more than just showing up on time to an appointment. It’s about being prepared, prioritizing your activities, and respecting others’ time.  When you are late to an appointment, not only does that take away from the time allotted for your meeting, but it also tells the other person that they are not important and neither is their time or schedule.  When I was a child, my father would want to show up to every meeting and event ten or fifteen minutes early. It used to drive me crazy. We were always the first ones to everything! But what I didn’t realize at the time was I was being taught a lesson on punctuality. It was a character trait that was very natural to my father, but hard for me to learn.

When we are not punctual, it doesn’t just affect the other person’s time, but ours as well. We have to rush to the appointment, we aren’t as prepared as if we had shown up a few minutes early, we don’t have as much time as scheduled to devote to the topic of our meeting, and then we can’t finish on time. This then ruins the plans for all those involved in our appointment or meeting and it, in turn, wrecks the following plans for anyone else.  Punctuality is just another way of showing respect to co-workers, business partners, and friends and family. It’s a way to tell someone you respect them and you realize their time is as valuable as your time.
